1890-1914 Economics In Foreign Policy
Through the use of high tariffs and a gold standard, the McKinley administration restored American prosperity. Foreign nations, due to economic struggles and crop failures became dependent on the United State’s prosperity. This along with many other factors developed America’s strong sense of nationalism. The United States, from 1890 to 1914, played an active role in imperialism due to this sense of nationalism. The foreign policies of the United States were principally guided by economic motives. This is seen in such actions as the annexation of Hawaii, freeing Cuba from Spanish rule, and the Open Door Policy in China.
