A Rose For Emily (Inner Monologue)

Dear Mama,
I am no longer a servant for Miss Emily, which both saddens and excites me, and am now taking refuge for now with some of the other Negros riding the “underground railway,” or at least that is the name they gave it. But Mama, Miss Emily had not been herself for a long time now. First, her father had passed. You should remember him; he was your plantation owner back when he was alive. The others told me stories about being beat every day even if all their work was done, and they barely talked for fear of more beating or lynching.
