A Soul Is Born
When I was eight years old, the highlight of my week was the day I visited my grandfather. He and I would spend most of the day in his huge garden doing whatever needed to be done: preparing the soil for planting, planting tomatoes, peppers, broccoli and herbs, weeding, or burying the fig tree and covering it with the fallen leaves. My grandfather patiently demonstrated each technique and I would do my best to imitate every single detail. Once I felt more confident, I started a small garden of my own as a tribute to my grandfather’s tutelage and as an expression of my Italian heritage.
