The article “All-Colored— But Not Much Different: Films Made For Negro Ghetto Audiences, 1913-1928 by Daniel J. Leab illustrates the transition and progression of black cinema. The article discusses points in time where films move from portraying “Negros” as their stereotypical fried chicken and watermelon loving characters to being given real roles in all-black cast short movies. People like William Foster began this movement with films such as “The Butler” and “The Grafter and the Maid”.
