Phillips’ argument in this chapter was that when the African Americans came from the South, they had to adapt to a whole new way of life and culture. The way they practiced religious ceremonies was different, even among blacks. Down in the South they were used to the chanting, shouting, and yelling during their time of worship. However, now that they were in the North, African Americans started to become more educated and no longer wanted to practice that kind of worship.
