Upton Sinclair was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1878. Sinclair had an interesting childhood in that his father was a liquor salesman, often coming home in a drunken stupor, causing him to see the effects of alcohol on lower middle class citizens and how it could destroy family ties. Another interesting thing about Sinclair was that he had wealthy grandparents with whom he often lived with. This gave him an insight into the lives of the rich and the poor, seeing these two social settings greatly influenced his novels.
