Writing Assignment 1: The Ancient Middle East
In Mesopotamia around 3500 and 2500 B.C. women and men wore the same item of dress, a skirt. The skirts they wore varied in length, but they were made with the same type of material. This article of clothing would be considered draped. This skirt was wrapped around the body and tied near the shoulder.
This item of clothing was held into place on the body by the use of a belt. These belts were thought to be wide and also padded to hold the skirt into place. Long skirts were passed under the belt and over one shoulder.
