Antonio Vivaldi Spring
Antonio Vivaldi’s “Spring” starts with a burst of fresh air. Even without knowing the poem that accompanies the piece, any listener would truly get the feeling that spring has arrived. It should not be surprising that the poem starts with the words ‘spring has come’. Vivaldi re-affirms this by setting the opening in major at a fast tempo (allegro), while also having a fortissimo dynamic TR. 10, 0-0:30. The opening also establishes the theme or ritornello that is heard throughout the piece. The opening follows with violins playing trills TR. 11, 0-0:30. Without knowing the poem a listener may find it difficult to tell exactly what is going on at this point in the piece....
