“Emotions have adaptive functions for children—they help them decide how to act” (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2004). As a child matures, he or she gains the ability to control and convey their emotions in a “socially acceptable and personally effective” (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2004) manner.
