The context is that part of the reading that immediately surrounds word and makes it meaningful. Context may be a phrase, sentence, paragraph or longer passage. Often a word standing by itself has little meaning, or has several possible meaning, and requires a context to give it a specific meaning. It frequently used word that illustrates this condition is principal. It could mean several things.
Mr. Gordon was the high school principal.
The stockbroker was a principal in the corporate merger.
The principal due upon sale of the property was $10,000.
