Biblical Influences In The Grapes Of Wrath

Was Steinbeck actually trying to rewrite the Bible? In The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, the Joads, a family of migrant workers, move to California from Oklahoma in search of work and a better life. Steinbeck portrays many Christian symbols from the Bible throughout his novel: the movement of the Israelites, Jesus Christ, the deluge and the rite of Communion.
The novel is divided in three parts that are parallel to the Biblical story. First, in chapters 1 through 10, the Joads get ready for their journey, then in chapters 11 through 18, their journey across Route 66 to the Promised Land is described and finally in Chapters 19 through 30, it is their settlement in California...
