The Mineral Biotite
Biotite K(Mg,Fe++)3[AlSi3O10(OH,F)2, commonly known as black mica, is a silicate mineral in the common mica group. Biotite was named by Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann in 1847. Hausmann named the mineral in honor of Jean-Baptiste Biot, a French Physicist who discovered the optical properties of mica in 1816. Biotite is considered a mixture composed of four basic aluminosilicates of potassium, iron, magnesium, or aluminum: annite, K2Fe6(Si6Al2O20)(OH)4; siderophyllite, K2Fe5Al(Si5Al3O20)(OH)4; phlogopite, K2Mg6(Si6Al2O20)(OH)4; and eastonite, K2Mg5.
