Borrowing
Borrowing is a term that designates the process by which a language takes an element from another language and keeps it for good. Both languages have to be somehow in contact and borrowing will only take place if the target language is ready to take the borrowed element from the donor language. It is the first step for language change. Nothing will stop borrowing except isolation. Everything in language can be borrowed: words, whole sentences, expressions and syntax. Even so, borrowing takes place mainly with small, detachable elements. Only elements that fit in the target language will be borrowed.
