Neurons vary in size and shape but they still receive and transmit information. Neurons are individual cells that are the smallest units of the nervous system they have short fibers branching out around their body call dendrites. The dendrites pick up the incoming messages from other neurons and transmit them to the cell body. A single long fiber is extend from the cell body call an axon, which carry outgoing messages to neighboring neurons or to a muscle or gland. Axons range from one to 2 millimeters or 3 feet.
