How is the practice of Buddhism expressed in the U.S?
During the 19th century, a vast number of immigrants began to arrive in the New
World from East Asia. The first immigrants arrived from China around 1820. Following
the Gold Rush of 1849, in large numbers. In 1853, a Chinese American fraternity built
the first Buddha temple in America. In 1854, another society built the second one. By
the end of 1875, there were eight more temples. The 1900’s brought almost 400 Chinese
temples on the West coast of America. Each one of these temples contained some
Buddhist elements....
