Chicago became very famous after the Columbian Exposition of 1892. Different races from different parts of the country and world came to see this event, since the first exposition in Paris, France made a great hit. As people came to see this event, many decided to stay in Chicago or around the states. This led to the massive migration around the early 1900s, right around the time of World War I.
