The widespread use of children in mines and factories during the Second Industrial Revolution was the result of previous trends and circumstances that had begun in the late 18th century. The use of child labor became more egregious because of the amount and rapidity of manufacturing resulting in the need for more coal and more factory workers. The technological advances in some cases required the use of the physical characteristics of children. Often times, though, it was easier to justify paying children less making their use in labor a purely cost related decision.
