Ignaz Semmelweis was a Hungarian physician who lived in the 1800’s and worked at a obstetric clinic in a Vienna Lying In Hospital. Semmelweis was bothered by the horrors of child birth fever. Within a few hours after delivery, numerous mothers would be afflicted with high fever, rapid pulse, swollen abdomen, and excruciating pain that would kill one out of 10 women. Semmelweis made an observation; the hospital was divided into two clinics: the first was for the instruction of medical students and the second was for the training of midwives.
