Cold War

The so-called Cold War is a bipolar struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union, and their allies and client states, that lasted from 1945 to 1991. On an ideological level, the conflict pitted democracy and free-market capitalism against Marxism and political communism. On a strategic level, the Cold War was a proxy struggle in which both Washington and Moscow used allies and satellite states to fight substate and regional battles while avoiding another world war.
