Although Bessie Head was born in South Africa, she is considered to be one of Botswana’s most important writers. She was a victim and a survivor of the racist laws of her homeland because her mother, a wealthy white woman, had an affair and a child (Head) with a black stable hand. This caused Head to feel alienated and unwanted in South Africa and due to these feelings she moved away to Botswana to start a new life for herself.
