Background
Six months into this year, fifty hospitals were involved in merger contracts. Why is this becoming a common occurrence? It has been a challenge for non-profit hospitals to borrow the money needed for updated equipment and hospital improvements. Urban hospitals in Detroit, Chicago, and Boston are fighting to get credit and realize that there greatest option to succeed is to merge with for-profit companies (Gold, 2010).
