In 1384, Zhu Yuanzhang decided to reform his city, Nanjing, to communicate more directly with the Heavens. Cosmology was a significant factor contributing to the change. Not only did cosmology served as a sacred place connecting humans to the otherworld, but of the spiritual domain. The emperor appointed himself the status of the Son of Heaven. Also, a Hall of the Great Sacrifices was built to honor the deities: Heaven, Stars, Earth, Thunder, Rain, Wind, and Clouds. Temples were structures to praise the Gods of Grains and Gods of Soil.
