Cronon Chapter 3 Summary

In Chapter 3 Pricing the Future: Grain, I agree with the statement that without farmers there would be no cities. This is important because grain was one of the factors which led to Chicago becoming the gateway to the Great West. The growth of Chicago was enabled by the fertile lands of the Great West through the use of transportation. The most important things in this chapter were the farm families who made use of prairie lands, merchants who shipped the grain in sacks, railroads which encouraged changes in grain marketing and transportation, and the importance of future markets which facilitated the rise of Chicago and the settlement of the prairies.
