Ever since the collapse of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 the discourse on terrorism has changed from a topic of concern to a heightened state of awareness. Due to the increased awareness of the threat throughout the world and the subsequent response from the United States government and her allies, al Qaeda has evolved from an international terrorist organisation to a decentralised ideological movement. Over time al Qaeda has altered its organisational structure and political strategies to counter the measures opposing it.
