Indonesia has approximately 240.3 million people living on the island of Java. Java is the size of New York State and is the most populated island in the world. It is also the most densely populated area in the world. Indonesia has numerous related but distinct cultural and linguistic groups, many of which are ethnically Malay. Indonesia has 300 ethnic groups each with cultural differences and with their own languages and dialects. These groups include India, Arabic, Chinese, Malay and European. The breakdowns of these groups are as follows: Javanese 45%, Sudanese 14%, Madvrese 7.5%, Coastal Malays 7.5%, and Other 26% (Mackie, J.).
