SOUTH AFRICAN FIRMS’ PROPENSITY TO PAY DIVIDENDS AND THE ALTERNATIVES THEREOF
1. INTRODUCTION
In this paper the theory on dividends and its alternatives was applied to firms in the South African economy. Firstly, the theory behind dividend payments, the propensity of firms to pay dividends and the alternatives to dividends were discussed. An analysis was then undertaken to examine the trend of the dividends being paid in eight sectors of the South African economy and the economy as a whole. The sectors studied were Hotel and Leisure, Manufacturing, Retail, Industrial Transportation, Banking, Construction and Materials, Beverage and Mining and Minerals
