Thailand’s polity had long been struggling with military leadership which has held the country under its tight control. Yet, beginning with the 1970s, there had been increasing hope for democratic consolidation as several thousand Thammasat students protested for an extension of democratic rights. Although the country returned to its status quo three years later, meaning military authoritarianism under the king’s passive guidance, a first but tentative step towards democracy had been taken.
