Thesis: The presence of evil gradually became more powerful in Act One of the play Hamlet.

The initial appearance of the ghost in Act One on a cold, misty night outside Elsinore Castle serves as an indication of the presence of evil and predicts future troubles. The sentries guarding the castle are nervous as they have been frightened by something extraordinary – a ‘thing’, ‘a dreaded sight’, an ‘apparition’.
