Fitzgerald repeatedly writes from what he knows, as does any good author. Over and over he writes about the south and ultimately the Southern Belle. In fact, Fitzgerald himself “said on one occasion, ‘I married the heroine of my stories”’ (Holman 54). Why does Fitzgerald return to the same subject again and again in his writing? Is it because he was always the outsider, or did he view the south, along with the Southern Belle; with contempt? Through two of his short stories (“The Ice Palace” and “The Last of the Belles”) Fitzgerald begins by luring the reader into a world where he seems entranced and enamored by the Southern Belle but by the end...
