The story “Everyday Use” begins with a mother waiting for her oldest daughter Dee to arrive. During Dee’s visit the girls have diverse ideas on what to do concerning a few family heirlooms. Social status, family traditions, and newfound traditions are included. Mama is the narrator of the story. She describes herself as “a large big boned woman with rough, man-working hands” (Walker, 2011, p.283). There is no mention of a father so Mama has taken the role as mother and father for her daughters, Dee and Maggie.
