Hamlet’s Madness

Authors and playwrights often use characters that act as if they are captured by insanity to contribute to the whole meaning of the work of literature. This character would use his or her apparent madness to mislead the thoughts of another or to achieve a goal. The madness often creates a distraction to another character or conveniently makes him or her reveal something unusual to add to the plot of the story.
