The war of 1812 began over a series of economic sanctions created by the British and the French against the United States. These were the result of the Napoleonic Wars and the outrage of the American citizens due to the British practicing impressment.
In 1806 the British Orders in Council attempted to destroy the American trade by enforcing various embargos. The embargos that were enforced damaged the United States much more than they did Britain. This angered the citizens of America and provided support to War Hawks who resided in congress like Henry Clay.
In 1812, the United States declared war on the British due to their actions....
