The Awakening begins in the late 1800s in Grand Isle, a favorite summer vacation place of upper class Creole families in New Orleans. Edna Pontellier is vacationing with her husband, Léonce, and their two sons at the cottages of Madame Lebrun. Throughout the novel, Edna Pontellier, experiences a series of “awakenings” that open her eyes to a life of individualism, romantic passion, and self-expression.
