Destiny is one's predetermined lot. According to this definition, nothing can or will alter the result of one's life. If something is supposed to happen, it will happen. However, can one's personal characteristics change one's destiny? It is possible that one's overwhelming pride can affect the outcome of one's life. This issue is tackled in Oedipus Rex. Sophocles uses irony to communicate that both one's hubris and one's destiny affect one's life. Sophocles uses verbal, dramatic, and situational irony in Oedipus Rex.
Oedipus is a very arrogant man. He believes that he is an equal to the gods. He says, "You pray to the gods? Let me grant your prayers" (line 245)....
