Throughout the late eighteen and early nineteen hundreds a level of fantasy was cast about the idea of immigration to America. The cliché idea of leaving rags in Europe for rich in golden-paved America motivated many people to leave their old countries and set sail for a better life. This same fantasy existed in Italy, and there it seems (and was) too good to be true. Life in Italy was one full of oppression and poverty, but Italians saw hope in America, and emigrated. When they reached America, they were thrown into a hard life of labor and discrimination.
