Most jazz critics have been white Americans, but most important jazz musicians just happen to be African American. This might seem as a simple reality to most people, or at least a reality which can be readily explained in terms of the social and cultural history of American society. And it is obvious why there are only two or three fingers' worth of Black critics or writers on jazz, say, if one understands that until relatively recently those Blacks who could become critics, who would largely have to come from the black middle class, have simply not been interested in the music.
