Bertolt Brecht was born in Augsburg, south Germany in 1898. He was born in to a wealthy family of the bourgeois class which he traded for the common class. During university he studied science and medicine and was called up to help clean up world war one. The traumatic experience of mending wound, cutting off limbs and the carnage of war made a lasting impression on Brecht’s character and hence his plays.
