John Rawls was born in 1921 to William Rawls and Anna Stump in Baltimore, Maryland, as the second of five children. He attended Princeton, where he “became deeply concerned with theology and its doctrines.”1 Rawls considered studying to be an Episcopal priest, but instead, he joined the military after getting his Bachelors of Arts in 1943.
