I picked "The Minister's Black Veil" by Nathaniel Hawthorne as an example of the short story horror genre. Suspense is created within the text when the local minister, Mr. Hopper begins hiding his face behind a veil of black crape. The entire congregation is thrown into a tizzy trying to make sense of Mr. Hopper's adornment. Speculation runs rampant as reflected in the voice of a parishioner "But the strangest part of the affair is the effect of this vagary, even on a sober-minded man like myself.
