Stem Cell Research
The human body is composed of approximately two-hundred cell types, each performing distinct functions. Each of these different cell types is derived from early-dividing cells (that is, those that are produced through divisions immediately following fertilization) which have not assumed a particular function, and thus maintain the potential to mature into any cell type. These pluripotent cells are colloquially known as stem cells because of this said ability. Current research techniques include harvesting cells at the blastocyst stage (approximately 100-200 cells) (Fischbach 1364), a stage prior to implantation into the uterine wall.
