1. The doctor in the story offers two seemingly incongruous services. How can these services coexist?
Wilbur Larch is the name of the doctor in the story. He runs an orphanage where women can come to have babies they have conceived out of wedlock, and then leave to the care of Dr. Larch and two nurses. The story is set at a time in American history when having children out of wedlock was considered a heinous moral offense. This was also a time when abortion was illegal. Hence, it is only behind the scenes that Dr. Larch conducts abortions for women who come to him in need.
