To Hear Or Not To Hear…
Over the course of many years there have been many arguments between the deaf and hearing communities. A large portion of the arguments concern methods to restore hearing. One of the newest methods of hearing restoration is the cochlear implant. A cochlear implant is a device that replaces the cochlea in the inner ear. It uses a chain of small electrodes inside the ear that are connected to a microphone and a receiver outside the ear.
The debate over this procedure began soon after the first report in 1957 that inner ear and hearing nerve stimulation was performed successfully in a totally deaf person (Electrical 1). What have so many people been arguing about for 50 years?...
