In 1990, Wal-Mart hoping to repeat the success it experienced in the United States entered Mexico. Retailers such as Comercial Mexicana S.A. (Comerci), one of Mexico’s largest retail chains, faced serious competition from Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart’s purchasing power enables them to purchase merchandise at a much discounted rate which is passed on to their customers through low prices. Local retailers in Mexico are not able to compete and are driven out of business.
