1. Introduction
Emergent change in an organisation can be characterised as “…adjustments in reaction to changes in its direct-action and indirect-action environments†(Stoner et al 1995). Thomas and Bennis (1972 cited Stoner et al 1995) say that planned change is the deliberate design and implementation of a structural innovation, a new policy or goal, or a change in operating philosophy, climate or style to help it adapt to changes in the external environment or to achieve new goals.
